Introducing Project Work Without Losing Syllabus Pace

Projects enrich learning and threaten pacing when they sprawl. Tight briefs with checkpoints keep both goals alive.

Define the artefact and the rubric on day one. Students cannot hit a target you have not named. Rubrics also protect marking fairness later.

Schedule checkpoints on the academic calendar before you announce. If checkpoints collide with term tests, the project will lose, or the test will.

Teach one transferable skill explicitly: research citation, data table, or oral defence. Projects without skill teaching become unsupervised craft time.

Cap group size and define roles. Uneven labour kills motivation; roles make contribution visible.

Protect syllabus weeks with a written trade. What did you shorten to make room? If you cannot name it, the project is wishful packing.

Exhibit outcomes briefly so effort feels seen. A twenty-minute gallery walk often beats a long mark dump alone.
